So I signed up for a Behance profile months ago, along with my colleague Oliver. Other than a great source of inspiration, I kinda figured it was just another social network to waste time on.

But ironically, the site has actually done good for me, considering how little I used it. At first I just uploaded my portfolio and forgot about it. A few months later some pretty well known design blogs featured my typography portfolio and then soon after that, Comptuer Arts Magazine contacted me for a typography feature in the next issue of Computer Arts Projects. So I have Behance to thank for simply being out there to display my work. But after that, I always felt I was too busy to work on my profile and I neglected the site again.

Until recently. I received a call from a gentleman named Scott (he works at Behance) who wanted to chit chat about how Go Media was using the site. It’s not every day you get a call from the people who run your social network. And they told me about their other site, behance.com - which has a lot of other cool resources for helping organize and network the creative community.

So after that call, I felt inspired again. I felt like I need to really take advantage of this site and try to get more out of it. So Oliver and I updated our profiles and almost immediately, Oliver was awarded with a feature on the home page for his awesome Concentric series. So congrats to him! That series definitely deserves it.

And it’s quite obvious, a few minutes on the site and you realize that there are some amazing designers on there. One misconception about Behance is that it’s just like your typical social network. It’s not like Myspace. It’s more like Linked In; providing you professional directories of skilled and talented designers. There are bloggers, agencies, and magazines looking at the site in addition to other designers. So it might just be worth my while to keep using it. We could use any extra work or press that can come out of it. Honestly, who couldn’t!

A few months ago, I wrote a tutorial for Computer Arts Magazine about how I put together the CD Package for the band Hollywood Ave. I wanted to share you the link, since it’s now available for free online in PDF form. Follow a brief to produce complete CD artwork from concept to final product, using Photoshop and Illustrator

The CD package I’m going to show you how to create over the following pages was a real commission I undertook for New Jersey rock band Hollywood Avenue. The band gave me a lengthy brief that described their vision for their album artwork down to the very last detail. This was both a good and a bad thing; good because I knew exactly what to create, bad because with the client having such a specific idea there was little room for manoeuvre.

The band’s idea was very imaginative and allowed for a surreal and artistic piece. Typically, I found stock photos of individual pieces or textures and assembled them together using various image-manipulation techniques in Photoshop, and I even used hand illustration to fake some parts. Colour overlays and other subtle effects and textures were also used to help blend things together.

Follow this tutorial to find out how I made Hollywood Avenue’s insane vision come to life. I’ll talk you through my workflow and decision-making process rather than focus too much on specific graphical techniques and I’ll also explain how to use printers’ templates to make sure your design comes up to their specs.

Hey friends! We’ve posted another design on Design by Humans. You readers did a great job of supporting Jeff’s first submission so we figured that we should keep you all updated on more DBH postings.

This is our second submission and it is the apparel version of one my “Concentric Series” prints. This particular design has been stolen by a couple of bands and used as cover art. There has also been a clothing line or two that has produced something similar to this design, and they are trying to cramp my style MAAAAN!!!

I figured Design by Humans would be able to do this design justice and create a really awesome shirt from it. I tweaked the design to flow over the shoulders and onto the back of the shirt. If this gets printed and does well, maybe I will submit some of the other pieces of the series.

So we have finally decided to do something about our long list of purely digital mockups that make up a large part of our portfolio. We’re finally getting them printed.

Vote for this Tee and get it printed! But we need your help. We have decided to use Design by Humans to print our tees. DBH is a contest site much like Threadless, but a lot of my peers over at Emptees have had some great success with the site and their printing quality and capabilities.

The only catch is we need to get a lot of votes in order to be printed. But I am pretty confident that with all of our fans and loyal readers of this blog we can pull it off. You need to sign up and vote for the tees that you want printed and if they get enough votes, they will!

We get emails on a daily basis, no joke, about people wanting to buy the shirts on our site. We don’t advertise that they’re for sale and there is no add to cart button, but people are going out of their way to ask. And I always have had bad news to tell them that they were in fact just mockups and not available for purchase. It’s a drag.

Why use DBH? Why not print yourself?

We’ve gone back and forth with trying to find a printer that can do our designs justice and print like the mockups, but it’s been difficult. There is also a large upfront cost to printing shirts ourselves. Which is normally fine if we’re just doing some simple spot color designs on the center of the shirt. But what we want are the jumbo prints, the full color simulations, etc. It’s not easy and it’s certainly not cheap for us to print. So that’s why we’re trying out DBH. Everything I’ve heard says they can do it. So let’s find out!

Bold is Beautiful
