As its name suggests it, its purpose is to help the user identify fonts. Has this ever happened to you? You are given some printed text or logo and want to reproduce it. The font seems familiar but you can’t recall its name. You start going through the fonts on your computer but after several minutes you realize this is hopeless. I guess this quote deserves some explanation. Through intensive web browsing, I came across this wonderful iPad app: LetterMPress. Then I found this amazing Flickr group. I was sincerely blown away by what this app can do. I knew drawing apps could be amazing — just look through George Coghill’s Flickr stream, he has some sweet preliminary sketches done with Sketchbook Pro — but simulating letter press design? Another fact of interest is that the app’s development was funded through Kickstarter, like the last WMC Fest. After a…

I have a personal stance against plugins (“creativity doesn’t come from drop-own menus,” credit to Von Glitschka), so I decided to never get them. Then, a few months ago, Astute Graphics launched a new version of their tools, got them rebranded by Von Glitschka (see a pattern?) and made quite a buzz about it. I downloaded the trial, watched the videos, and then…work happened. I…

Today, I want to share with you my impressions after trying out App Cooker, an iPad app that assists in the process of conceptualizing and planning mobile apps. It has been created by Hot Apps Factory, a French studio. This is a new exercise for me, for various reasons: I’ve never reviewed an app before I just recently became the daily user of an iPad The starting point Well, it’s quiet simple: devices like the iPad make for a really exciting support for various apps, built to answer various needs. It’s just logical to think about using the device itself to conceptualize the…

For this initial overview, I’m just going to talk about the new stuff in Photoshop and Illustrator since those are the apps that I am most familiar with. Mostly I am going to talk about what I think are the most compelling features from an illustrator/designer’s point of view. If you’re among those, you’ve no doubt been confounded by the lack of a “collect for output” feature in Illustrator. Enter Art Files from Code Line Software. And be sure to read on for a special discount offer on Art Files for our Go Media ‘Zine readers. Get it together Art Files is a standalone program for Mac OS X that gives Illustrator users a “collect for output” or “package” feature, just like in InDesign. Perhaps because Art Files was created for such a specific purpose, it’s dead simple…

Archived; click post to view.
Excerpt: Although it rarely happens to me, I see tons of Twitter friends posting about their Adobe software crashing while working on a file. InDesign has a pretty robust temporary file feature that usually saves what you were working on, however that’s only useful if you work in InDesign. What about Illustrator and Photoshop users? Enter ForeverSave. ForeverSave is a clever application that does versioned auto-saving of your open files. ForeverSave isn’t limited to Adobe software, but it’s the primary reason I was interested in the app. It works silently behind the scenes, yet instantly accessible via the menubar icon. Very customizable, not only…
