User Showcase Contest: Results!

Mmmmmm, smell that? Not only is it Friday (awesome), but two lucky designers are giving off the sweet smell of victory. A week and almost 800 votes after opening our first User Showcase Contest, we have a couple of winners! Remember the prizes? $100 bucks and a Complete Vector Set from Go Media go the first place winner.The second place winner receives a Vector Pack from Go Media.

Many talented artists have submitted their work to the Go Media User Showcase, which as of now has 970 entries. Not too long ago dugdaman suggested that it would be cool “if we could vote on the best ones and also offer design feedback to anyone who asks”. Well thanks for inspiring this contest dugdaman! The pieces picked for this contest are all really great, but I’m excited to see how everyone votes.

We’ve narrowed the choices down to ten entries, but we’re counting on you to decide who is most deserving! So, take a careful look at each entry and cast your vote in the poll box at the bottom of this post. If you’ve got a personal favorite that isn’t featured as an entry, let us know in the comments. The entries are shown in no particular order and traverse many different areas from apparel design to editorial layout (we didn’t say it would be easy to choose!).

Concentric Downpour wins Shirt of the Month

It’s been a few weeks now, but I’m extremely happy to say that my first DBH Submission, Concentric Downpour, has won shirt of the month for June on Design by Humans! A big thanks to everyone that voted, left a comment, or bought one. It’s already sold out in medium and large! I’m really stoked about the win and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the next Go Media submission is just as successful. That way, we can continue to afford to buy more jalapeno chips, twizzlers, ice cream bars, and other snacks.

Computer Arts Projects: Typography Feature for Jeff Finley

In addition to the feature in Advanced Photoshop this month, I was blessed with a feature in Computer Arts Projects. Issue #111 Typography to be exact. Go Media featured in Advanced Photoshop Magazine

We were lucky enough to be featured in the new issue (Issues 45) of Advanced Photoshop Magazine. They were pretty generous, giving us a two page spread as well as covering the Arsenal in later pages. I can’t thank them enough for being so kind.

Watercolors in Use: Alex Cherry

So to go along with the release of Watercolor Texture Set 2 at the Go Media Arsenal we’re highlighting Alex Cherry and his subtle use of the textures in some solid pieces. “Black Cloud” shows just how versatile these textures are - when desaturated and darkened they make great noire ink stained arms.

“Bold is Beautiful” shirt finally printed!

I’m happy to finally be able to tell everyone that this shirt has been printed and is for sale! It couldn’t have come at a better time (on my 26th birthday!). I take my hat off to the people at Design by Humans who were able to print the “unprintable” so to speak. People gave me shit for designing something that could never be printed while others gave me praise for doing the same. I’m glad DBH was able to step up and get this done. 9 colors too!

I think DBH should post an article or tutorial on how they printed it. Because everyone wants to know. Btw, anyone at DBH reading this should consider how an article or video about it could be used as a great marketing tool. Let us know if you do, we’ll be sure to post it here.

Vietnam Werewolf shirt printed huge

Pat from Shout Out Loud Prints sent me over the first print of the Vietnam Werewolf shirt I designed. It looks great. He was able to print it huge like that. I’ll post more photos and give you all a link to buy as soon as the shirt is released!

User Showcase Highlight: Round 11

As of this writing our Go Media User Showcase has 888 entries and 406 members. Here are a couple pieces that I thought put some of the items in Go Media’s Arsenal to good use. Specifically the Watercolor Textures!

This piece has some nice 3D text with some watecolors added.

This next piece also uses the watercolors in an interesting way along with some other lighting effects. Pretty cool.

Go Media on the Behance Network

So I signed up for a Behance profile months ago, along with my colleague Oliver. Other than a great source of inspiration, I kinda figured it was just another social network to waste time on.

But ironically, the site has actually done good for me, considering how little I used it. At first I just uploaded my portfolio and forgot about it. A few months later some pretty well known design blogs featured my typography portfolio and then soon after that, Comptuer Arts Magazine contacted me for a typography feature in the next issue of Computer Arts Projects. So I have Behance to thank for simply being out there to display my work. But after that, I always felt I was too busy to work on my profile and I neglected the site again.

Until recently. I received a call from a gentleman named Scott (he works at Behance) who wanted to chit chat about how Go Media was using the site. It’s not every day you get a call from the people who run your social network. And they told me about their other site, behance.com - which has a lot of other cool resources for helping organize and network the creative community.

So after that call, I felt inspired again. I felt like I need to really take advantage of this site and try to get more out of it. So Oliver and I updated our profiles and almost immediately, Oliver was awarded with a feature on the home page for his awesome Concentric series. So congrats to him! That series definitely deserves it.

And it’s quite obvious, a few minutes on the site and you realize that there are some amazing designers on there. One misconception about Behance is that it’s just like your typical social network. It’s not like Myspace. It’s more like Linked In; providing you professional directories of skilled and talented designers. There are bloggers, agencies, and magazines looking at the site in addition to other designers. So it might just be worth my while to keep using it. We could use any extra work or press that can come out of it. Honestly, who couldn’t!
