Design Industry Insight

This is the third time I’ve done this weekly review, and I think it’s pretty helpful. What do you guys think of it so far? Are you keeping track of what you’re doing? I hope so. Anyway, here’s the list for what I got done this week.

  • I sent low res artwork for this new book about Tees. Waiting on approvals to see if anything I submitted will be included.
  • I reviewed Liz’s document she prepared about brainstorming ideas for the next generation of our Prooflab software.
  • Continued communication and “finalized” the work to be done on Phase 2 of Arsenal 2.0 development. I say finalized in quotes because Phase 1 is slated to really get started by our programmers at the beginning of next month. Phase 1 is simply building out our front end design and integrating it with CS Cart. Phase 2 is adding all the new features to the front end that aren’t included with CS Cart by default.
  • We’re about 99% done with the animations and graphics for the new Tattoo show. The only thing left to approve are the lower thirds. I can’t wait to show you guys the work we’ve done once it’s all been done and approved.
  • Finished the shirt for the band from Dying Skies. See the proof after the jump:
  • Did some shirts for Motown and Harley Davidson. Once approvals come in I can show them off.
  • Started another tshirt design for the Human Abstract. I plan to finish that one and another by next week.
  • Made a lot of headway on the new version of GoMediazine. It’s going to shred.

  • Had a meeting with Adam Wagner, our newest hire, about Arsenal 2.0 and GoMediazine 2.0 stuff. We are super excited for both.
  • Got into a few new bands (this is over the past month) such as Good Luck, Jonesin, Drunken Boat, Nana Grizol and a few others.
  • Received the order of shirts from Design by Humans which inclued Oliver’s shirt which won Shirt of the Day a week or so ago. It’s awesome.

    • This week I spent most of my time working on the new Go Mediazine. I can’t wait until we launch it. Expect to see it sometime next week. I felt like I was so busy this week, and didn’t really have time to read emails or spend quality time on other projects. I still feel accomplished, but this week flew by. I went to bed and woke up thinking about Wordpress and the new design that I will blow all your minds with in a few days. :big grin:

    Oh yeah, and we are releasing two new fonts on the Arsenal the next two weeks. Get stoked for that.

    Yeah, I think it was the black rope line art that seems a little blurry. In photoshop you could use the unsharp mask filter before you export the elements.

    Also, if you see how the preview images for posts like the freebie vectors get down-scaled, it makes the vectors blurry, and I don't know that you can do something about it, but if it could be fixed I think its worth a try.
  • @Matt - Thanks for all the crits. I really can't help the blurring thing, that's what happens when you draw/design it in Photoshop. And I'm not quite sure what you want "crisper" exactly. The line drawing stuff?

    On the navigation issue, I'm still working to try and figure out how to get the newest posts to show up in the featured boxes and then the rest of them show up in the smaller boxes. I'm not sure how. If anyone can help, let me know.

    Jeff! It's great. As Sean said, it really does more to convey the GO Media aesthetic than the previous design. I like it a lot.

    Some comments:

    1. I didn't quite no where to go... as in the previous flow was obvious as it was most recent at the top. Now that the organization seems to be more topical, will it be obvious where new posts are?

    2. Stressing that I REALLY like the new design, I'd encourage you to try to get some of your design elements "crisper" at the top.

    The GO Media style is so crisp and vector, I feel the site design should be the same way. They aren't bad, but do have a slight softness to them that makes it feel as if I'm not quite focusing right.

    The screen-grabs at the top of the page (featured articles?) that are slightly scaled down also ad to the blurring effect, and I don't think that showcases your vector packs/ art in the best fashion.

    The Gomediazine 1.0 had a blurry title, and by the end it really was getting on my nerves. Jeff, I do love the design. I just also know you guys pursue perfection and wanted to spur you on towards that goal.

  • @RandomEntity - this is a different book, I don't know a whole lot about it. I think it's something overseas.
  • I second that motivational attitude of these follow ups!
    I got one of those ActionBooks after reading the first and have been pretty impressed with how much i've been able to keep on track and get things done.
    Is that the tee book that MAS is putting together?
  • @AJ - Some book called Tees - I don't know much more about it than that.

    @Joel, good job man, and good luck! I hope you can stick to it. That's always the hardest part. Just try to do it for 30 days.
  • Jeff, your weekly "accomplished" list is def a motivator. I've always been good with taking notes and making lists, but never with staying organized. A few weeks ago when you posted that entry about the task book you picked up at behance, I decided to get a task journal of my own at walmart. I have a friend who does the same thing, and I just never thought to do it that way. I took all my random notes laying in piles on my desk and entered them journal style into my new book. Every day if I have thoughts, ideas, new tasks whatever I just write it in the book. It's been helping me stay much more organized and very efficient. Thanks bud.

  • I haven't submitted my stuff for the book yet. I guarantee it will be on the last possible day. I also guarantee it will suck ass.
