I think it's mostly useful for an “on the go” tool to sketch or doodle with some of the basic graphics software tools one is used to.

And interestingly enough, info has been leaked about an upcoming USB touchpad to be released by Wacom which would give users the ability to do just this.

Mhmmm… Even if the “touch” part looks really good, I'm still not sold? If it's that great, why don't we have graphic pads that allow the same?

But it's true that it'll allow people with awesome drawing skills and no knowledge of a computer to start producing digital art :-)

I picked up a Pogo Stylus: http://tenonedesign.com/stylus.php and it works great on the iPhone, for everything including sketching.
