pre 10.5 os I can vouch for Carbon Copy cloner free edition. It worked on mom's mackbook to restore from HD failure with a bootable image.

I use Time Machine for semi-regular backups. I also started using Nomadesk for online backup. It also does file sharing and I can sync between my MacBook and my home computer. I can even access my files from my iPhone. Pretty sweet.

Cmon! I know you guys use PC's at GoMedia – how bout some windows love?!

No this is actually an issue I've been trying to grapple with for a few weeks now. I haven't had any crashes or losses, but that's what really opened my eyes – it could happen!

I want to know more solutions for PC. I'd really like to get some best solutions for off-site back up.

Good article George. I've lost too many things over the years & paid too many hundreds of dollars for disk recovery to consider being anything but a paranoid freak about backups.

I use Time Machine to back up my MBP to an external drive about once a week. I also use Backblaze (www.backblaze.com) for $5/month to back up data files online. It runs constantly in the background at whatever bandwidth you choose to give it. It took 40 days to do my first backup (120GB), and now it just runs in the background and finishes same day (unless it's one of those days when I'm generating a lot of gigs of new artwork).

I like this setup because since I travel so often with the laptop, I know that I'll always have an up-to-date copy of my files in the cloud as well as a full system backup at home.

The only downside is when I turn up the bandwidth for Backblaze, and forget to turn it down when I'm done, slowing my connection to a crawl until I remember why.

Hey George, really great article! I'm curious though, what about RAID 5? Is that really a safe option for data loss. No, it won't protect my boot drive.

I'd like to visit your studio sometime and see this setup. Does it sound like several freight trains when all powered on? :-)

Great article! I use superduper to make a bootable clone of my Mac. Never worry about losing data and having the clone means almost zero downtime if there is a problem.

I've been using Jungle Disk for almost 1.5 years with absolutely no problems.

Its cheap, works on Mac, Windows and Linux and you even get online access to your files.
