Works based on thirds that way you have to get payed even if they do not go with you. 1/3 For concept/idea/ 1/3 for execution of concept/idea and a 1/3 once it is completed.

But what if you are trying to get leads or trying to get your foot in the door. It's tough being a freelance designer.

I happen to screw my self up I recently created a shirt design I put alot of effort into it, and only to show it to the company, they shot it down, and no money was ever even paid, I knew that I should have asked for a deposit upfront, but I did not.

But that is the woes of design, and whats bad is that like Oliver stated the Marketing group and Advertising teams are the one sin charge and sadly sometimes they just don't have the eye for a good design and often they choose a poorly done design.

Thanks a lot. Now I know how the system works. Not going to get myself in "pay-less" project anymore.

In response to Genozider: there is almost always a deposit before we start working. Most of the time it is a 50% deposit, and this is an effective way of making sure that you won't be completely screwed if the client turns out to be shady.

In the case of the band stuff, there usually is a deposit called a kill-fee which is a small amount. The designer would get paid a larger amount if the design is chosen in addition to the kill-fee. What I'm saying is getting a design chosen is not very easy.

And there are some cases where you just want to work on the project because you're excited and skip the deposit process. That's an easy way to set yourself up to get burned, and that goes for any project, not just band merch.

I agree with Genozider and wonder if you charge anything before the project starts? I was always sure that thats the way to go, charge a percentage upfront in case they drop it leaving u with nothing. Is that not how GO Media works?

Hi,

After reading your article, I feel that being a designer is quite a painful job actually. If the client asked you to create an design for them but they did'nt pay you(because they changed plan, not to have the design anymore) after looking at the product even though you had done whatever they wanted. What will you do? I had this type of experience a few time.
