Answering Questions and Taking Suggestions!

Turquoise Flag-Tip

What do you want to know?

Sometimes it’s hard for me to decide what to write about or what our next tutorial should be. So what better way than ask you! So, to all our loyal readers, give me some questions or suggest some topics or tutorials. I’ll stick them all in my brain and decide what to spit out next.

Go ahead and post your suggestions in the comments and my answers (if I have one) will be future posts.

I would like to see how you do such clean tracing on your type treatments. How it goes from a sketch to smooth vector.

I’ll echo some of the requests. Because I’m more production than creative – I’d love to see the workflow (case study based) of Haley’s intro’s, etc… We often see great ideas a day late and a dollar short. I’m sure most of us just want to add a little pizazz to our private work, not steal the next big client… Because your business depends on it, you must stay current and even, dare I say, bleeding edge… You are the innovators of the next design trends – we are your apt pupils. thanks for everything – you all rock the dump… :)

I would like to know how to set up my documents for printing and for screen, how you guys work with colors you choose(because screen is different then print)

I know about the 300 dpi and CMYK, but when I print my art work from CMYK it still isn’t the same color as on my screen

To some of the posts above, there already is a tutorial on how to go from sketch to vector with outlines and stuff..

I have real trouble working with text to come up with fresh looking logos or designs. I want to do more than use stock fonts, and wondered if you guys have a way of working with fonts to really make them unique and sparkle.

I’d really like to see how Live Trace can be used effectively. I’ve used it multiple times but I just kinda fool around with the numbers and stuff and when I expand the appearance, it is not always as easy to edit as I would hope. So that would be a nice tip…thanks! you guys rock!

I would a tutorial on making your video opening. The one that has your logo with the explosion and the flock of birds. I actually think it is the animation used in the flock of birds tutorial.

I would love to see what kind of research or brainstorming you guys do when creating a poster for example. Just like the poster you have recently released. More specifically, do you just snap out ideas off the wall or research a certain topic, doodle related items, choose best ones and only then combine them?

In addition, a big one would probably be creating a logo for yourself. As in, many designers struggle with creating logo’s for their own services or companies, how do you guys fight that so to speak?

To echo some of the above; learning the best for-print work flow (color management, etc) and I’d LOVE to know who your printer is!

Also: How about some free calligraphic brushes like the ones you use in your comic book style illustrations? That would be rad!

I would like to know your creative process. Rationale for concepts, places for research, and exercises to do once you have a design assignment. I would like to peek into the studio and watch the evolution of a creative problem from concept to completion. Everyone’s process is different and you guys are very good, how is it done?

I think discussing how you create your custom type from paper to illustrator can be useful. I would like to see the techniques you use, because maybe you have certain steps which is can make the process easier and quicker or at least one of the two.

I really want to see a tutorial on how you would implement the vector sets you have into with photographs. I’m trying to make a photo album, but I want to add a rough, edgy feel to it instead of the plain old boring templates that are set up. I don’t want to use the vector art as “rubber stamps” but rather see it incorporated into with the pictures.

The photo album is a wedding one, so I would prefer to see ideas that don’t neccessarily include skulls and depressing things.

dirk: check out videocopilot.net for AE camera and other sweet toots. Also, as I stated in my earlier post(s) – designers and mograph artists are extremely reluctant (I’ve found) to offer their *tricks* for fear of losing work to fledgling wannabees… thus, why would Haley show us a step-by-step (using the products we purchase from GM) for one of his pieces? It might inspire a young artist to create killer work, hence, creating compatish for him (and other’s of course, I’m only using Haley as an example here) – similarly, if Jeff showed you how to “do what they do”, (which they did in the xcore apparel toot, BTW) we wouldn’t need to buy their products. That said, my time is much more valuable and I would rather buy high quality vectors (at a great $$ I might add) – than try to go all DIY up in here… Dang, I used “thus” & “hence” in the same paragraph – what is this, the 1800′s? er wut…

    peace all – [m]

@ beast – while you have a point, we don’t want to share all our “secrets” if you want to call them that, we do find it valuable to teach principles, tips, and tricks. Our goal is NOT to make mindless tutorials for people who have no creativity but want to achieve a high end result with no effort. We want to show a glimpse of how it’s done, offer advice, show some tips, and leave it to the artist to discover what works for them.

While I love the tutorials and the glimpses of how your creative process works, I’d love to know more about how the business process works. Like how you got started, how to cultivate a client base, etc. I’d also like to see the process you go through of taking the client’s wants through to the final product.
