Crazy Idea? Go Media Offers Design Help via Twitter

Turquoise Flag-Tip

Get Design help via Twitter from Go Media

Go Media is trying something new here. We’re using our official twitter account to offer design help and customer service. Crazy? Maybe.

Basically, designers like you can ask a question and we’ll try to answer it. It’s like having a know-it-all designer working next to you that you can bug from time to time!

We could be opening up a can of worms here, but we think it will work. I know most designers probably wouldn’t want hundreds of people asking them where the “make it cool” filter is or “How do I use Photoshop?” But we’re hoping we can actually offer some real help here. Let’s make it work!

Read up on the new project and find out how you can get involved.

For the future: If this works out, we plan to get some of our favorite designers to help out as well. Imagine having a network of brilliant designers there to give you tips when you need it? It could happen.

Ok, I know this is supposed to be for twitter, but I’ve recently joined Flickr and the Go Media User Showcase, but my submission isn’t showing up?

Sounds like quite a project. If it works out it would be great- It seems that using twitter might be limited since you cant use html code within the tweet. Im sure theres plenty of other logistics you guys have to consider as well. Good luck!!

@Chris OB – Twitter is good because it only allows for quick answers. We aren’t trying to give tutorials or give walk-throughs. The point is quick questions, quick answers.

Sounds like a big responsibility to take on, but a cool idea nonetheless!

Interesting. I’m excited to see how this works out for you guys.

I hope it doesn’t end up like Yahoo answers. Just a bunch of idiot kids adding nothing of value. (where the people asking are idiots and the Go Media folks are the exasperated poor bastards)

Sounds like a good idea, but you may get over saturated with designers asking dumb questions.

    Keep us updated!

Ah, hell, I may just have to get a twitter account!

I already have an Illustrator question in mind, like “is there a way to step and repeat objects along a path (much like text along path) because the blend tool and brush patterns suck at it.”

    :P

This is a great idea as a starting designer and student this could be a really helpful thing to help people learn. Definitively going to be following you guys and asking some questions.

@Robin You can alt+drag an object to move it then hit ctrl+d to duplicate that move over and over again. You can end up creating patterns this way, but it won’t follow a path. I actually like pattern brushes for this purpose, but they are complicated.

@Adam: Thanks man. The method you describe is probably the one I use the most, and you are right, it won’t do it along a path. I’ve tried experimenting with the pattern brushes, using a custom circle pattern for testing. The problem I encountered was that the circles themselves will get distorted along the path.

The direct message feature in Twitter might help narrow down those questions, as well.

    @robin,

Hmm… Using only 1 circle as the base and checking “add space to fit” instead of “stretch to fit” helps reduce distortion, but you’re right – it’s still there. Especially in jagged paths. Bummer. I’ll keep thinking / googling.

Great ideas guys. Hopefully it picks up some steam and you get a network of responders as well as repliers. Haven’t tried twitter before but I made an account to check this out. Although the only problem, I see with the twitter format is that for example I wouldn’t be able to see the question of someone else without also following them so it limits the ability for the community to help without everyone adding everyone. I like the concept though and it will be cool to see how it pans out.

truth is, i’ve been thinking this needs to be done by someone. I can barely keep up on my blog, so I knew it wouldn’t be me. but should have figured it’d be you guys. Have fun with that. I’m sure a day will come that I’ll use it. Heck it might be quicker than the GDF.
