Hidilly-ho Go Media Army! I’m here to give you all a quick update on the progress of our new Headquarters. I’ll absatively posilutely not bore you with too many words – just lots of pics, Okily-dokily? It’s been a while since our last post. Construction has been moving painfully slow. We have a new schedule from our contractor. He has promised a September 1st occupancy permit! Lets keep our fingers crossed. Currently all the framing and most of the electrical is done. Drywalling is scheduled to commence this week, so the next set of pics should look dramatically different.

I was born in the Louisiana bayou and slept on a mud floor until I was 16. Ok, that's not really true. I grew up in Cleveland Hts. Ohio and had a nice cushy bed. I was drawing constantly as a child, took art classes and eventually became the "class artist." I graduated from The Ohio State University's department of Industrial Design. I have always been trying to blend my passion for illustration with solid Graphic Design. Go Media was the culmination of my passion for both business and art. I'm trying to build a company that is equally awesome for the designers AND our clients.

    Just make sure the ductwork doesn't vent from a printing area or shipping warehouse into your office space. :)

    I worked at a place where the ventilation system used the same ductwork for the offices and the warehouse where they boxed products for shipment, did minor welding and soldering, and some painting. The cardboard dust from the boxes was the worst. I spent the entire year I worked there sick because of it.

    Well, I'm sure most designers would prefer to be on Macs... but in truth - we are 95% PCs. Why, you ask? Well, when I was getting the company started - back in 1997, I was BROKE. And Macs cost about twice as much as PCs back then. Also, all the business software I needed was also more readily available and cheaper for the PC. And that's how it got started. We are planning on adding a few Mac stations sometime in the near future, but for now it's PC ville over here.

    As far as PCs go - I have to sing mad praises to DELL. I've bought from a lot of manufacturers, and they've got the best customers service (so long as you're still under warranty. Also - their OptiPlex line of boxes are the MOST STABLE. It's not the highest line, but if you just trick-out an Optiplex you'll never regret it. When we buy their super-high-end $4,000 boxes, they break.

    The metal framing is actually very common in construction these days. Though, I think it's only used for non-load bearing walls. It's a little more expensive, but better (straighter) and easier to work with than wood. Also, it doesn't burn.

    Yes, the drywall goes right over the metal framing, even the curved walls. And yes, we're keeping it wide-open. The I-beams and duct work will remain visible. I wanted a very open and airy feel to the place. I wanted to be able to look across the room and see everyone.

    We're not far from Jacobs Field, but not right downtown. From The Jake (now Progressive Field) you go over the Lorain Carnegie Bridge and drive West on Lorain to W. 45th. We're right there. It's about a 4 minute drive from the park. Not Bad!
  • We have yet to take Jim's lead from The Office. Putting monitors in a jell-o mold might be tedious, but oh-so-worth the effort!
  • Love the photo of Katie's desk, that's awesome you do that do each other. Keeps things fun. My last job we always did office pranks like that. All the birthdays the boss would take the employee out for lunch and all the staff would have a theme with their desk/office. We would totally go all out. Shipping and receiving was one of the funnest we got so much stuff piled in the office that you couldn't even get in the office it was covered from floor to ceiling with everything you could imagine, an packing popcorn everywhere. Not to mention what we did to the staff cars. Anyhow, thought I'd join in on the fun. Keep it up :)

  • The aluminum(?) framework looks really interesting. Is that a typical construction technique for a commercial building or what that something custom (more green maybe?) your contractor is doing? Will the drywall be going right over that, including the curved walls? It looks like the place will have a very open quality to it, even with the walls up. Will you be leaving those glorious i-beams and ductwork visible for that industrial look?

  • That looks pretty mega. Stoked to see what the drywall will add. Been meaning to ask, does everyone over there prefer using PC's to macs? Any particular reason if you do? I mention it only because i notice the box under Kate's desk (or perhaps it's a custom machine with multiple OS's?)
