What do you want to know?

Sometimes it’s hard for me to decide what to write about or what our next tutorial should be. So what better way than ask you! So, to all our loyal readers, give me some questions or suggest some topics or tutorials. I’ll stick them all in my brain and decide what to spit out next.

Go ahead and post your suggestions in the comments and my answers (if I have one) will be future posts.

  3. Brandin Says:

Man, I’d love to know the design process you guys go through to create your posters, specifically the outlining and coloring in illustrator!

    It’d be (greatly) appreciated.
    Word :D

  4. V Says:

What always impressed me how you guys do your typography treatements like as i lay dying or dragonforce (i know you showed us how to do that wood effect) but i think a way better followup would be showing us how you come up with those crazy typo ideas do you base yourselves off a font

    teach meee

  5. pants Says:

More behind the scenes action! And maybe what goes into a good honest sandwich? Sorry, that’s my blog. Keep up the good work though!

  6. Katie Says:

Any Illustrator tutorials… coloring tips, gradients, all of that. It’s hard to find really good Illustrator tutorials showing something new and clever.

  7. Doss Says:

More typography treatments please!!!! They are great! And more info on working with apparel graphics.

  8. Brandon Says:

I would like to see how you do such clean tracing on your type treatments. How it goes from a sketch to smooth vector.

  9. LeChuck Says:

    I’d love to see:
How you arrive at a final composition for a piece

Where you get your fonts or what goes into making your own font

Any motion effects in flash would be awesome.

  10. LeChuck Says:

Any article on logo development. What makes a good logo, type treatments, font selection etc.

  11. dirk Says:

    1. After Effects 3D space, Cameras

    2. Your Logo typefaces

    3. How to make your flourishes, and ornaments just like your vector sets.

  12. [ beast ] Says:

I’ll echo some of the requests. Because I’m more production than creative - I’d love to see the workflow (case study based) of Haley’s intro’s, etc… We often see great ideas a day late and a dollar short. I’m sure most of us just want to add a little pizazz to our private work, not steal the next big client… Because your business depends on it, you must stay current and even, dare I say, bleeding edge… You are the innovators of the next design trends - we are your apt pupils. thanks for everything - you all rock the dump… :)

  13. Guido Says:

I would like to know how to set up my documents for printing and for screen, how you guys work with colors you choose(because screen is different then print)

I know about the 300 dpi and CMYK, but when I print my art work from CMYK it still isn’t the same color as on my screen

To some of the posts above, there already is a tutorial on how to go from sketch to vector with outlines and stuff..

  14. Nick Manning Says:

I have real trouble working with text to come up with fresh looking logos or designs. I want to do more than use stock fonts, and wondered if you guys have a way of working with fonts to really make them unique and sparkle.

  15. Nick Manning Says:

Actually - something sports themed would be great. I am the Press Officer for my Football team, and I struggle to come up with fresh ideas to make American Football stand out to a UK audience.

  16. Mike Says:

I’d really like to see how Live Trace can be used effectively. I’ve used it multiple times but I just kinda fool around with the numbers and stuff and when I expand the appearance, it is not always as easy to edit as I would hope. So that would be a nice tip…thanks! you guys rock!

  17. Greg Says:

I would a tutorial on making your video opening. The one that has your logo with the explosion and the flock of birds. I actually think it is the animation used in the flock of birds tutorial.

  18. Serg Chernata Says:

I would love to see what kind of research or brainstorming you guys do when creating a poster for example. Just like the poster you have recently released. More specifically, do you just snap out ideas off the wall or research a certain topic, doodle related items, choose best ones and only then combine them?

  19. Serg Chernata Says:

In addition, a big one would probably be creating a logo for yourself. As in, many designers struggle with creating logo’s for their own services or companies, how do you guys fight that so to speak?

  20. Rai Says:

    I have artist block.
Can’t seem to shake it. Any suggestions on how to get my creative edge back.

I am a cable TV technician with the soul of a graphic designer.

    Please help!

  21. Gabriel Perez Says:

    PRINTING…

I dont know if anyone else has asked this, but what are some suggestions for printing posters and other things of the sort. Kinkos? paper quality, paper type, inks, test prints, color matching, etc…?

ALSO, What about type techniques, how to do calligraphy style fonts, old english, tips and tricks for fonts…?

    Thank You

  22. MUSASHI Says:

I would like to see more Illustrator advanced tutorial (shadows, smooth curves, web 2.0 effects), more grunge compositions, how to create an amazing palette color, how to choose color for a beautiful gadient. i would like to see something to create logos and more, more, more sketches from your Designer Dream Team. thx bye

  23. Guido Says:

Rai - check the blog entry before this one..

please people look trough this site before you ask things..

  24. Dean B. Says:

What I need to do and things you would love to see, in order to work at go media………it seriously would be my dream job countering what I do now in retail advertising, what a creative downer.

  25. BiKlops Design Says:

To echo some of the above; learning the best for-print work flow (color management, etc) and I’d LOVE to know who your printer is!

Also: How about some free calligraphic brushes like the ones you use in your comic book style illustrations? That would be rad!

  26. Matt Says:

I would like to know your creative process. Rationale for concepts, places for research, and exercises to do once you have a design assignment. I would like to peek into the studio and watch the evolution of a creative problem from concept to completion. Everyone’s process is different and you guys are very good, how is it done?

  27. Joe Baron Says:

I think discussing how you create your custom type from paper to illustrator can be useful. I would like to see the techniques you use, because maybe you have certain steps which is can make the process easier and quicker or at least one of the two.

  28. Kara Says:

I really want to see a tutorial on how you would implement the vector sets you have into with photographs. I’m trying to make a photo album, but I want to add a rough, edgy feel to it instead of the plain old boring templates that are set up. I don’t want to use the vector art as “rubber stamps” but rather see it incorporated into with the pictures.

The photo album is a wedding one, so I would prefer to see ideas that don’t neccessarily include skulls and depressing things.

  29. gusbus Says:

anything Illustrator because good tutorials are very hard to come by.

  30. [ beast ] Says:

dirk: check out videocopilot.net for AE camera and other sweet toots. Also, as I stated in my earlier post(s) - designers and mograph artists are extremely reluctant (I’ve found) to offer their *tricks* for fear of losing work to fledgling wannabees… thus, why would Haley show us a step-by-step (using the products we purchase from GM) for one of his pieces? It might inspire a young artist to create killer work, hence, creating compatish for him (and other’s of course, I’m only using Haley as an example here) - similarly, if Jeff showed you how to “do what they do”, (which they did in the xcore apparel toot, BTW) we wouldn’t need to buy their products. That said, my time is much more valuable and I would rather buy high quality vectors (at a great $$ I might add) - than try to go all DIY up in here… Dang, I used “thus” & “hence” in the same paragraph - what is this, the 1800’s? er wut…

    peace all - [m]

    Hi all,
Something that just popped in my mind:
why is the email you recive from “Enter your email to get articles sent directly to your inbox:” always like a day late? And why isn’t this email nicely “layout-ed”, because this is what I get: http://img54.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gmrk1.jpg

hope you can solve it :)

  32. Anton Says:

I really would like to see some illustrator tutorial to do characters like those: http://sosfactory.com/mascots1.html

    Cheers.
    Anton

  33. Jeff Says:

@ beast - while you have a point, we don’t want to share all our “secrets” if you want to call them that, we do find it valuable to teach principles, tips, and tricks. Our goal is NOT to make mindless tutorials for people who have no creativity but want to achieve a high end result with no effort. We want to show a glimpse of how it’s done, offer advice, show some tips, and leave it to the artist to discover what works for them.

  34. Rose Says:

While I love the tutorials and the glimpses of how your creative process works, I’d love to know more about how the business process works. Like how you got started, how to cultivate a client base, etc. I’d also like to see the process you go through of taking the client’s wants through to the final product.

  35. Spammy Says:

How to make some kick ass abstract renders like superlover :)

  36. Justin Says:

show me how to make the flowers in the new gomedia poster, or something similar!

  37. Greg Hooker Says:

I love your RISEAGAINST design. Here is a link to a pic. I saw it on deviantart. http://gomedia.deviantart.com/art/Rise-Against-46911189. I am new to 3d. I would love a tutorial on how you made the text and color package.

  38. Marcus Says:

Could you guys provide some good places that print custom design t-shirts? Or a wholesale retailer that sells blank (quality) tees.
