I work and have worked for a graphic artist at a screenprinting company and we usually expect to separate the art and normally don't charge a fee, unless it's pretty complicated. I know that the separating is fine and all, but if each color was on it's own layer it would be better than copying the art four or five times or whatever amount you plan to use. The separation you did is good to let the printer know what's what and has been useful in the past.

But the technical callouts is definitely spot on and very crucial.

ive had my first experience with the direct printers for apparel and i must say that is COOL!
much more cooler than the regular screen printers. and the best part is that you dont need to separate colors and that kind of stuff. just create and print.
i mean, screen printing is cool but is an old technology and needs to be replaced.
cmon guys! we all have digital cameras, we are using modern computers and the next step is to use digital printers. so for me is the best choice and in a few years that will be a standard.

I work at an apparel printing company, if only all of the designers we had were like you! We do all of the separations ourselves but if the artwork quality is poor this becomes a huge headache.

Excellent work =)

I've just recently started getting into apparel design, and this tutorial was incredibly helpful. I've been doing color separations as separate files, cropping them out individually using the pathfinder tool. Your method for color separations will save me a load of time!

Hey There! It's really a good tutorial. As a screenprinter I must say: Awesome! Now, I should only add that register marks would be a lot useful. Some Designs have colors that are too close to each other or aren't exactly that logical to assemble.

As for gradients ... that's our job and we decide how to print them depending on the design.

Out of that this is a good place to start even for new screenprinters. Thanks a lot.

I currently work at a screen print shop as a graphic designer and all of this was new to me when I first started. But i can assure you this is exactly how it should be done. I tend to do this on a daily basis for companies who don't provide the print ready artwork, they're usually pissed for having to pay extra artwork/setup fees on top of whatever artwork fee their designers charged them.
This is very important information for those who design for apparel.
And as far as the direct to garmet printers, they are very impressive and some of the better ones do some amazing stuff!
