who gives a shit. guy makes money with what he is doing. if it requires him to place an image underneath and turn it into a photograph...it is a more hands on version of live trace in illustrator. he created an original image from a photograph. now if he were to trace an actual drawing that would be different. so shuddup. do what you got to do to create your image and he will do his.

Even though Photoshop is very friendly to use, it would definitely be better to achieve these designs in a vector-based program (i.e.: Illustrator, etc.) if it's meant to be resized as no data would be lost in the process.

And as someone else stated in the comments, even though tracing over an image seems easy and fast, it would be better to use the image as a reference only to draw from scratch.

It's called a reference. Depends on the context and what your trying to do I guess. When creating a digital piece sometimes you want to go for realism or ease of function, this is it. Like if your modeling the human body in a 3d environment, you use a reference and change from there if you wish, unless you've paid fo the reference. Like avatar.. If want something done fast, easy and cheap, this is an efficient way of a stylized skull.
