This technique is well worth doing for yourself as much as any front end web designers. I've had to come back to messy psd's I thought I was done with months ago when a client needs a little alteration. It certainly pays to give a file a touch of structure.

Useful tips, I have been forcing myself to organise my PSD's into folders and label layers as it helps save time and looks more professional. It's just hard to remember when you start to get into the flow of a new design.

@Adam_Wagner Good question! I can only say that my preference for organizing rollovers and effects inside PS files is by stuffing them in their own folders (if necessary) and stacking them above elements they relate to (like a button or link, for example). This obviously depends on what effects you have added to your layers, but it makes sense for me to think about PS files in a descending order with all the 'bells and whistles' nestled in after a solid structure has been established. This is normally how one would think about markup, so why not a PS file? ;)

Just what I needed to hear. But hey Liz, where should I put rollover / click gfx? That's what usually causes the most messiness for me.

My goodness this is so true. I am both a designer and a front end developer (and secretly a ping pong champion) and I just dealt with someone else's design in Photoshop for the first time. When you look at my files, I follow all these rules (being a front-end perfectionist has led me to be OCD in my designs so that months later I can look at them and know what's going on).

This guys file:
Nothing was merged
Nothing was labeled
I had to hunt and peck for EVERYTHING

I ended up charging double because of the time (and headache) it took to slice, which was funny because that ended up being MORE than if they just came to me in the first place.
